Status de conservación según BirdLife: vulnerable
Habita pajonales en bañados y pastizales altos en la provincia de Corrientes, este de Formosa y sur de Paraguay.
Anda solitario o en parejas; posa sobre los tallos altos de grandes pajonales.
Se alimenta de insectos que captura en vuelo o sobre la vegetación.
Presenta dimorfismo sexual muy marcado; el macho tiene plumaje blanco y negro, con la cola formada por dos largas plumas negras. La hembra es parduzca, con dos plumas en la cola pero de corta longitud.
Hace un nido semiesférico con fibras vegetales. la puesta consiste en 3 huevos de color crema.
Es una especie amenazada por la pérdida de hábitat, depende mucho de ambientes que no han sido modificados o que estén poco alterados. En el siglo XIX estaba más extendido, siendo registrado tan al sur como la provincia de Buenos Aires.
El macho mide 32 cm de longitud y la hembra 21 cm.

As soon as I saw your picture of Alectrurus risora I remembered that this was the bird featured on the front cover of this guide book. It is a bird I have never seen, so thanks for introducing me to it on your blog. On another matter entirely, for several years now we have favoured Malbec above all other wines. Recently we have been buying two brands mostly, one called Don David (!!) and another named La Linda, surely named after your beautiful Jorgelina! I will drink a toast to her tonight. I do not understand that guide, a pity for me that it is only in English, the truth is that although I understand a lot I do not like having the name of the birds in that language, I do not get used to their names, many are difficult for me to pronounce .
